This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a special education preschool classroom located in a large urban district in California. Many of my students come from low-income families and are English Language Learners. All of my students have a diagnosis of autism. My classroom is the only autism-specific preschool classroom in my district! My students are all getting intensive behavioral early intervention.
Our classroom doesn't have a playground! When we aren't able to walk to the park, my students have to play on the blacktop, without any play structure! We're one of the only schools in our district without a play structure. Can you imagine how much my students want to jump and climb and tumble? They can't do this on the blacktop!
These mats will help me create a jumping and tumbling area for my students. I will hang a mat on the wall and put the other mats on the floor. I have some balls and other active toys. This will be our indoor playground. My students will finally be able to jump and climb and tumble safely!
It's so important for students to engage in active play, especially students like mine, some of whom live in residential hotels and housing projects, and don't have access to active play spaces. Your generous donation to my classroom will make it possible for my students to engage in active play, even though we don't have a playground.
