As a school we've trying to ensure our literacy practices are up to date with the newest research. We've been reading a lot about the science of reading and the importance of science and social studies curriculum as a part of knowledge building units that strengthen literacy skills. Science has always been a passion of mine so when our school decided to make time to focus on integrating science into our literacy time I was thrilled.\r\n\r\nThis project allowed me to have more than enough supplies to build terrariums for my entire class. In years past I've always had to fund the materials for this unit or give up getting other classroom materials for the start of the year because these supplies would take me over budget. So, having to not worry about if I could pull off this unit with the supplies I had was such a weight lifted off my shoulders and the kids were so enthusiastic throughout each lesson.\r\n\r\nAfter students built the basis for their terrariums they had so much fun personalizing the plant matter and creatures they could put into them. Some students added rollie pollies. Others would bring in leaves and small plants they found near their homes or around school. For one, the chess set couldn't have come quick enough. My students are currently obsessed with playing chess and I'm not quite sure where they came from but I'm so glad it's something that doesn't require a screen that they are interested in. Two chess honestly aren't even enough for the classroom. Students sign up to play the winner immediately every time we have some free time to set up a game. Additionally, the sand and bubbles timers are a hit! They are always the first thing to be grabbed during cooldown time and the last thing to be put away. Students can't wait to get back from recess and choose their favorite tool to have a five minute reset before we get back into work.
