My Project

I teach math to 9th-12th graders at a high school in Portland, Oregon. Our school is among the most diverse schools in the state of Oregon. 67% of the student body belong to ethnic groups other than white and 63% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. In my current classes, my students speak 11 languages other than English.

My students are insightful, creative, passionate kids who work hard to make a difference.

The switch to online learning during the pandemic took a lot from all of us. Our school lost over half of our calculators when supplies were sent home. We had two cohorts of students graduate and others moved to different areas - taking our calculators with them. Currently, I have my own person calculator that students share. We need class sets of calculators to give students the tools they need to be successful.

Putting calculators in the hands of every student gives each student the tool they need to solve problems. Many students are discouraged by computations and algebraic manipulations and calculators help ease that stress, allowing more students to solve problems and appreciate the power and value of mathematics in the world today.
