Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class are hard working students. They show perseverance, and they have good character. They are enthusiastic learners who have a passion for learning and living. My school is located in the heart of a community in a busy city in Southern California. A majority of our students are of Latin descent and come from homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken.
My students come from low-income, economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As if suffering from the effects of poverty wasn't enough, many of my students are being exposed to domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, lack of health care, hunger, homelessness, and substance abuse. Their families do not have access to resources and there is very little support at home. Nevertheless, my students show an appreciative joy and have a positive attitude when they come to school each day.
My Project
Academies Time at our school is the time during the day when our students our grouped according to their abilities and needs, which range from letter recognition to building fluency and comprehension skills.
The manipulatives I ordered, such as the Unifix Cubes, the Rhyming Dominoes, and the Reading Comprehension Cubes will help me provide engaging and educative, self monitored centers that students visit during our Academies Time.
While the students practice and strengthen their target skills in these centers, I can work with a small group of students with the confidence that my independent groups are truly learning independently.
