Abstract Emotions: Bringing Bold Ideas to Life

My Project

My students are imaginative young artists who thrive when they are given the freedom to experiment, take creative risks, and make their artwork their own. Last year, our Kimmy Cantrell-inspired “Abstract Emotions” masks quickly became one of their favorite and most memorable projects. Students construct their masks from cardboard, use tempera paint cakes to create a vibrant base, and then bring their unique designs to life with POSCA paint markers.

The paint markers are where their creativity truly shines!

Their vibrant colors allow students to add intricate patterns, bold outlines, expressive details, and finishing touches that are difficult to achieve with traditional paint. Last year, my students had to share the single set of POSCA markers that I personally provided across multiple classes and grade levels. Even with limited materials, one student’s Abstract Emotions mask was selected for a Superintendent’s Choice Award for Guilford County.

With additional paint markers and supplies, my goal is to give every student greater creative freedom and access to the colors and tools they need to fully develop their artistic ideas. I cannot wait to see what they create when their imaginations are no longer limited by the supplies available to them!
