For many of my students, outdoor play is more than just a break from the classroom—it is an opportunity to practice communication, social skills, gross motor skills, independence, and making choices in a fun and natural environment. We have been encouraging students to choose activities they enjoy, take turns with classmates, and participate at their own individual levels. One of my favorite moments has been watching students who may be hesitant to participate at first become excited to go outside and independently choose an activity. Seeing their smiles, engagement, and growing confidence reminds us how important it is to simply let kids play!\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they first saw the new materials! They immediately wanted to explore everything and began pointing, reaching, and showing us what they wanted to try. Some students jumped right in, while others took a little time to observe before joining the fun. It was wonderful to see their excitement and curiosity. For students who sometimes have difficulty finding activities that are motivating and accessible to them, having new opportunities to move, explore, and play was especially exciting. Their smiles said it all!\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building independence and social skills through our daily classroom routines and outdoor play. We are working on following simple directions, making choices, communicating wants and needs, taking turns, and interacting with classmates. We will continue incorporating movement and sensory activities into our lessons while giving students opportunities to practice these skills in a fun, natural environment.
