I teach a class of 6 students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. My students have a varying range of functioning but are working with the same classroom materials. I recently took a very helpful workshop on how to give my students functional communication, (four of the six are nonverbal.) This includes a system of positive behavior supports that require consistent reinforcement and availability of wanted materials. We are on the fourth floor of a school with no elevator and due to transition difficulties we only leave the class for lunch. The PECS system of functional communication requires reinforcement of requests for desired items such as toys, sensory activities, snack and drinks. Due to our isolation we do not have access to a refrigerator to store food items and we don't have access to a laminator to create the PECS system for the students to request items. The students also need positioning support to maintain proper seating and safety in the classroom. These items will give the students the adaptations necessary to function in a classroom.
