A Warm Welcome to Our Newcomer and Refugee Students

Help me give my students flexible seating options and a warm, welcoming, tech-friendly classroom as they adjust to school and life in the United States for the first time.

My Students

The majority of my students are refugees from a wide range of countries including Congo, Syria, Haiti, Guatemala, and more. They are new arrivals to the United States in the very beginning stages of learning English. Many of them have limited formal schooling, while others have a strong educational foundation on which to build. For this reason, my classroom is a hub of differentiation, with some groups working on very basic skills like number sense and counting, while others are pushing ahead into more advanced Algebra and Geometry content, all occurring within the same Algebra 1 class period.

My Project

My students are all newcomer and refugee students in the earliest stages of language and culture learning.

As they acclimate to the US and have their first experience in a US classroom, I want to create a warm, welcoming environment that takes into consideration where they have been, and where they are heading.

My classroom already contains many individualized elements that I have purchased on my own, but I hope to add flexible seating, fidget chair bands, charging stations for each table, and additional decor that lets them know they are welcome and loved.
