My Project

In the 2026-2027 school year, I will be teaching a new English Language Arts elective centered on the reading of graphic novels as literature. Our Spring semester will be centered around the superhero genre with a focus on how genre acts as a form of rhetoric and how archetypal figures and storytelling are regularly reinterpreted by the culture to comment on itself.

The final unit of our semester focused on the superhero genre/archetype will be centered on the study of Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction and David Aja.

This comics collection features visually innovative stories that challenge our students' developing sense of how narratives unfold in the medium of comics while also challenging their perceptions of the genre they've spent a semester studying. After their study of this text, students will engage in a final project centered on the subversion of the "classic" superhero archetype and the visual mode of storytelling that accompanies it.

The comics form and the superhero genre are approachable to readers of all ages and, with supplemental prose texts, this will be a rigorous unit in which students explore the impact of genre on readers, the re-interpretation of archetypes in storytelling, and the use of allegory for social commentary.
