My Project

My students are curious, excited about learning, and ready for non-traditional ways to grow and challenge themselves. So many young people begin their adult lives without the ability to plan meals and cook for themselves, and many develop unhealthy relationships with food.

How many times have I opened the cabinets and the frig and asked myself: What am I going to make for dinner?!

This project focuses on the calming effects that cooking can have--building peer relationships, managing stress, learning about food and health, increasing confidence, practicing patience, finding a creative outlet, and encouraging self-sufficiency. They will share their creativity in a positive, supportive environment that uses joy as daily medicine. Then, we will gather around a dining table to sample what we have made, something that many of our students do not often experience.

This project provides shelf-stable items (pasta, beans, rice, chicken, potatoes) that can be purchased in advance. Perishables will be donated or purchased from local farms.
