Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Keeping up with technology is tough, especially in a Title I school.
I am thankful for our new Smartboards but now I want to offer my student the full package.
My fourth graders are a very sociable, engaged, and motivated bunch who love technology and are the best teachers in the class. I love giving them every opportunity to learn in the way that meets the standards of a 21st-century education.
In my wonderful Title I school, technology at home is scarce. My students access to the internet is often limited to their use of their parents' phone. But, they do not have to feel left behind if these resources are freely available all day to them at school.
Recently, my students engaged in a online learning platform entitled Kahoot!. I designed my quiz to review homophones. The excitement in the class was electric. They loved the competition as well as the feedback that the game offers. They really learned the content and the subsequent paper and pencil quiz proved it.
My Project
My students get supercharged about learning when they are on their own researching topics of interest to them. I love to see the energy and motivation for learning when I pull out the Chromebooks. However, 5 Chromebooks for 20 students is not the optimal learning environment. I want to put technology in the hands of all my students.
I want to expose my students to all the new and enriching programs that are being developed for education.
Recently, we have been working with programs such as Kahoot! and Quizzes. These online quizzes will record and display data for the teacher as students challenge themselves and others on line. We cannot optimize all the features these programs offer if the students do not have their own tablet.
Furthermore, the reading programs that are free are incredible. Epic and Newsela, just to name a few, put leveled books right in their hands. These programs also offer assessment which the teacher can use to target instruction. And, who knows what future programs will be able to offer.
Unfortunately, the only way we can implement programs in the classroom is to share my computers with other teachers. That means coordinating with 3 or 4 teacher every time we want to access tech for each student in our class. We need technology on demand if we are to stay competitive with classrooms across the nation. Won't you help us accomplish this goal?
