A Space to Breathe: Creating a Calming Corner

Help me give my students a calming space where students can regulate emotions, build coping skills, and return ready to learn.

My Project

My students are bright, resilient, and full of potential. They bring unique personalities, strengths, and experiences into our school each day. However, students sometimes arrive carrying stress, frustration, anxiety, conflict, or other emotions that can make it difficult to focus on learning. What makes my students special is their ability to keep moving forward, even on difficult days. I want them to have a space at school that reminds them that their emotional well-being matters and gives them practical tools for navigating challenging moments.

When students have a safe space to regulate their emotions, they are better prepared to return to the classroom ready to learn.

Through “A Space to Breathe,” I will create a calming corner where students can take a brief, purposeful break and practice healthy coping strategies. Comfortable seating will provide a place to decompress, while sensory and fidget tools can help students redirect nervous energy and regain focus. Mindfulness activities, breathing and grounding resources, journals, and other calming materials will help students identify their emotions and choose appropriate strategies for managing them.

My goal is not simply to create a comfortable corner—it is to create a space where students develop skills they can carry with them beyond school. Students will learn that taking a moment to regulate themselves can help them communicate more effectively, make healthier choices, manage frustration, and return to learning with greater focus. Over time, I hope this space helps students become more confident in recognizing what they need and independently using positive coping strategies. Sometimes, a student does not need to leave school—they simply need a space to breathe.
