A Soft Place to Land and Learn

My Students

For the past two years of this ongoing pandemic, my students this year are children who have been inadvertently left behind. Their situation stems from several causes, from limited internet access in their individual homes to a lack of parental supervision; but the result is the same--they are in great need of Tier 2 or Tier 3 literacy instruction to catch up to grade-level performance.

Literacy education in the lower grades is the foundation of all learning.

As a reading interventionist, my goal is to help my students learn how to read and retain information with fluency and facility. If they can acquire the skills to do this, it will make an impact on them for the rest of their lives.

My Project

My elementary students are falling behind their peers in reading and language skills. Some of these students feel uncomfortable leaving their classroom to come to the computer lab for reading interventions. It is not a warm and friendly place for small group reading and discussions. With comfy chairs and a warm rug, the students will better be able to open up for small group discussions on the literature we are reading.

To help children feel comfortable in a stressful situation, they need a soft place to land.

Coming into a warm and welcoming room with engaging reading materials that are neatly organized would help alleviate their anxiety. Many of these children do not have reading materials at home, so these new books would be used as a classroom lending library that the students could take home to continue their reading.
