My elementary students are falling behind their peers in reading and language skills. Some of these students feel uncomfortable leaving their classroom to come to the computer lab for reading interventions. It is not a warm and friendly place for small group reading and discussions. With comfy chairs and a warm rug, the students will better be able to open up for small group discussions on the literature we are reading. To help children feel comfortable in a stressful situation, they need a soft place to land. Coming into a warm and welcoming room with engaging reading materials that are neatly organized would help alleviate their anxiety. Many of these children do not have reading materials at home, so these new books would be used as a classroom lending library that the students could take home to continue their reading.
