Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of a very large, urban school district with a very diverse student population. Our school is a dual-language Spanish Immersion magnet, in which all students in the school receive half of their instruction in English and half of their instruction in Spanish.
By the time they become sixth graders, nearly all of the students are bilingual.
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment.
Our school serves ESL and special education students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, sensory disorders, anxiety, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Teaching students sensory processing and self-regulation are two powerful components to support student achievement. These hard-working students strive every day to meet their own individualized academic and social goals.
My Project
Our school is looking to increase student engagement and attention. By utilizing a sensory path in our school setting we can utilize a series of coordinated movements to decrease unwanted behaviors while increasing cognition. We are seeking floor and wall decals that will establish a sensory path for students to experience sensory inputs and motor planning.
The sensory path will work for all children to help them focus, regain composure and return to their learning environment in a positive way.
Many students with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, and exposure to trauma, experience this dysregulation sensory problem.
A student who is processing sensory information has an impact on their attention and ability to regulate their bodies and emotions. It is difficult to learn when you have the need to move, jump, and bounce. This sensory path will help kids to regulate their bodies and emotions.
These vivid and engaging visuals provide physical input from jumping, hopping, pushing and motor planning that stimulates key parts of the brain and the body to help students meet sensory and movement thresholds and learn self regulation strategies.
