A Safe Space, a Full Belly, and a Healthy Mind!

Help me give my students a comfortable and safe place to talk about their feelings and struggles. By providing a foldable desk, microwave, and art supplies, I can feed hungry bellies and talk with my students through art.

My Students

I have the wonderful privilege of working as a school social worker/therapist at a Title I junior high in Ogden, Utah. The students I get to talk to every day are smart, resilient, resourceful, and fun! I learn from each student daily. Whether that is teaching me the latest TikTok dance or the fact that we are often stronger than we think.

Through the many different changes and challenges over the last few years, the students have shown up for themselves and their community.

Although they are strong, they have also had some struggles that have impacted their mental health.

I have a poster in my office that reads "You can be a masterpiece AND a work in progress at the exact same time." And that is exactly what we all are, and that is what I try to teach each individual student and staff that comes into my office.

My Project

The last few years have been really hard on our students. Because of the pandemic and other trauma in their lives, they have had a hard time coming back to school. Trauma can also make it difficult to focus or make friends in school. By providing a safe space within the walls of the school, I am able to help them become connected to the school and also process some of the trauma in their lives. To be able to be the most effective at this, it is important to have a warm inviting space and a variety of ways to be able to communicate and connect. The microwave will be used to warm the requested food so that students have a full belly before we chat. The fidget toys will help relieve some stress or anxiety as they keep their hands busy while we talk. The art supplies such as water paint, markers, and a small table, will give another alternative for students to process the different experiences in their lives.

These different supplies will continue to enrich students as they heal from negative mental health outcomes as well as prevent further mental health issues.

As these students learn positive coping skills in my office, they naturally develop positive outcomes of more connection and better academic success.
