When students have experienced and/or are currently experiencing trauma, they can have a hard time focusing and connecting in school. By providing a safe space within the walls of the school, I am able to both provide a healthy connection, as well as help to process the negative effects of trauma. To be able to be the most effective at this, it is important to have a warm inviting space and a variety of ways to be able to communicate and connect. Some things that help this are providing a warm drink or warm food, offering fidget toys, and processing through art. These different supplies will continue to enrich students as they heal from negative mental health outcomes as well as prevent further mental health issues. As these students learn positive coping skills in my office, they naturally develop the symptoms of more connection and better academic success.
