Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham are books kids will read over and over again for the pure joy of reading.

My students are at-risk third graders who attend a public school in New York City.

Although many of my students are reluctant readers because of their weak reading skills, they are enthusiastic and motivated when reading books they enjoy. When learning about Dr. Seuss' birthday and the National Education Association's annual Read Across America Day, my students have committed to taking part in the reading celebration with thousands of other students at schools across America.

My Project

For full participation, my students need Dr. Seuss books, bookmarks and pencils as incentives. My students will be encouraged to read and REREAD these Dr. Seuss books to build their oral reading fluency skills. They will then share their favorite Dr. Seuss book by reading it aloud to small groups of students in Pre-Kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms on Dr. Seuss;s birthday. I am asking for funding this literacy endeavor because my students would not otherwise be able purchase their own books and motivational resources for this special day.

My school along with thousands of schools across America will participate in the NEA's Read Across America Day.

The NEA's national reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Seuss Geisel). Across the country, on March 2 thousands of schools, libraries, and community cen
