My Project

Beginning in the 1930s, O. High students wrote, edited, and published a yearly collection of exemplary visual and literary student work – a magazine they named the Oak Leaves. As of now, the Oak Leaves has been dormant since its spring 2005 issue. However, a group of my colleagues and I plan to revive the magazine next school year and recruit students to this project.

With your help, I would like to digitize the school's Oak Leaves archives and make these magazines open access for all.

The school has a complete set of magazines from 1933-2005. In order to preserve these historic volumes, I would like to purchase a professional-grade book scanner to quickly create high-quality digital versions of each issue. So much history of student voice and creativity is within each volume of the Oak Leaves, and looking through each volume so far has been a gift that I would like to share with the O. High community.

A professional book scanner would solve all of the challenges and time constraints that I have encountered so far with digitization. Since flatbed scanners do not accommodate bound books easily, I have had to scan issues page by page. I have not yet tried to scan the older volumes because I am afraid of breaking their decades-old binding. The CZUR ET Series scanner is quick, has built-in software to fix page curvature, and does not require books to be flat or unbound before scanning. This device would be an incredible help, not only for the Oak Leaves digitization project, but even for creating digital PDFs of course books in English classes here at O. High.
