Communication Counts! Help students with autism learn to speak, understand language, and communicate. I teach 7th and 8th grade children with autism in a special day class. These students are in the only class of it's type in the district and are in the most restrictive setting the district offers.
These kids have had 3 different teachers in the last 3 years, a very bad situation for students with autism. The class is relatively new and resources are given to other students in other classes. These kids and this room had so few materials when I started and since they are visual learners they need as many visual cues and manipulatives as possible in order to learn.
By using photo cards and real objects, the students can begin to use receptive and expressive language to indicate their needs and wants. With time, training, and a lot of hard work we can turn the autism deficit into a strength.
You will help my students to use the visual strengths they possess to make up for the communicative deficits by providing the materials necessary to promote speech and language in the classroom.
