It's absolutely wonderful to see all of the students involved and engaged in the lessons with this equipment, allowing them to reach their true potential.\r\n\r\nI know for a fact the equipment will be put to good use in the future. Throughout November, students have been hard at work using the tools in the Make-Do kit creating all the pieces for their own \"Gingerbread Houses\". For many students, this was their first time using tools and they approached the experience much as they would play. They had fun working cooperatively, putting their physical all into the act of cutting the cardboard, and gained valuable problem solving skills through the process. Students took pride in their work and when they assembled their house shapes, it was almost magical for them!\r\n\r\nThe next step in the gingerbread house building process was to create tons of \"candy\" out of Model Magic clay. Some students pretended to have a restaurant, filling orders for each other and communally sharing the fruits of their labors. We made gumdrops sprinkled in salt (to look like sugar), candy canes, mints, jaw breakers, whipped cream swirls, and whatever else the kids imagined! These pieces were added to the houses using a modified glue of shaving cream, flour, and white glue which is very similar to frosting. Just like a real gingerbread house, they piped on the lines and adhered the candies. The result was each student creating their own unique and durable cardboard gingerbread house, which they will be taking home for winter break.\r\n\r\nAfter students completed this project, some were inspired to create other subjects, such as cardboard footballs and robots. Teaching art is most rewarding in moments like these, when students take what they learn and apply it in ways which are most inspiring to them. Thank you for providing my students an outlet to express themselves in this way. Having access to these tools has opened up endless possibilities for working with cardboard, a readily available material which has so much potential for creativity!","fullyFundedDate":1726146501559,"projectUrl":"project/recycle-and-build-teaching-exceptional/8738489/","projectTitle":"Recycle and Build, Teaching Exceptional Student Skills for Life","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Breyer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6928082_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725472251842","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/msbreyer"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1085","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":572,"numTeachers":119,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":27,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":3,"percentLatinx":44,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":"4.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.7,"schoolId":1085,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 75Q Robert E Peary on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 75Q Robert E Peary","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-75q-robert-e-peary/1085"}
