A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

I need a digital camera, camera pouch, and digital memory card to capture my students hard at work and play for years to come.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach twenty hard-working and motivated first graders in a low-income urban setting. Given the high number of second language learners, I use visual aids constantly to enhance my lessons and the students' learning. One of the visual aids that I employ the most is photographs of the students throughout the year. I document our field trips, special projects, routines, birthday parties, and guest presenters. I focus on the families, classroom rules, five senses, and the different people in our school. Once those photos are printed, we turn them into class books. The kids write about who is in the picture and what they're doing. We make covers and bind them, and then the class books live in our library throughout the year. The books are very popular with all the kids, as they like to revisit the things we've done and the places we've seen. At the end of the year, we have enough class books for each kid to choose one to keep at home. These class books have become a tradition in the three years I've taught first grade. They're very useful on many levels, particularly for writing and reading, but also to help the students gain a sense of community. All three first grade classes frequently go on field trips together, so I am able to include students from other classes in our class books, and give their teachers copies of the pictures to use. Other teachers around the school benefit from my ever-present camera as well, since I document school events like the science fair and Halloween Parade. Many of the pictures go into the school's yearbook at the end of the year. Our English Language Learner curriculum calls for many photo projects like a book on the five senses and different leaders around the school, but one must have a camera to make the projects happen. The camera that I have used in the past has quite a bit of wear and tear, as can be expected with such extensive use. It has stopped performing as well as it used to (very long shutter delay), and the pictures are no longer as good as they once were. It would be very helpful to have a replacement camera, case, and memory card in order to continue the tradition of class books and documentation of school events for years to come. Thank you for your support of our classroom, my teaching, and public education!
