My Project

My students are a fantastic group of 20, third graders who reside and learn in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. They are an eager bunch who love to read just about anything! This year, like in years past, I have set a goal of reading a picture book a day to my students. Every afternoon, we end our day by reading a picture book together.

Watching my students' eyes and minds turn as they learn new ideas, make connections to the characters in books and discover different ways of life during our read aloud time has been one of biggest highlights of the school year.

Reading aloud to children allows them opportunities to increase their literacy skills by increasing their vocabulary, focus and improving their listening and fluency. The books I've chosen to help us reach our goal will give my students more opportunities to explore books as mirrors of themselves and windows to the world they've yet to discover.
