My Students

Our high school is a wonderfully diverse school community. I have students from dozens of different countries and many cultural backgrounds. Most of our students are low income, so they can't really afford to buy new books themselves. Many are immigrants building their English skills. My students range from those already taking college-level courses to those who have struggled to pass previous history classes. But no matter their backgrounds or abilities, they are creative and excited. Regardless of their previous experiences in school, you can see motivation light up in them when they can see themselves in their materials and have the opportunity to be successful and grow.

I have seen how powerful it can be when students can see themselves and their backgrounds in America's history.

We strive to make sure our lessons and texts can help them to find that.

My Project

DonorsChoose supporters helped start our independent reading program. Help make those materials last for years to come!

The clear film will protect the books from scuffs, tears and spills that can come from being read by many students.

Even years from now, a student won't feel like the only options are tattered hand-me-downs.

The file folders are used for students to store their reading logs, list of books they are interested in and topics of interest. Everything nice and organized. Easy to stay focused on reading.

The pockets and check out cards help me to track who is reading what. As a bonus, a student looking at the names written on a book's checkout card can see the community of readers who also loved a book through the years.
