Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love cross-curricular teaching. I teach reading, but I choose topics students will relearn in another class. My goal is to expose my students to more expository texts from other content areas like Social Studies and Science. My first focus will center on Social Studies since my students have a hard time understanding the diversity of our history and the historical timelines involved with the establishment of our nation. Many do not look outside of their own community and have no clue that there is a world out there tied to their own history and culture.
I have students who struggle with history.
I want my students to know that we are a melting pot in this nation and it took a diverse group to create what we have today. Students often express surprise and are excited to learn about their history and how settlers were able to go from the Atlantic all the way to the Pacific. Many of my students are second-language learners. They need visuals and details to add to this knowledge. Vocabulary is such a key factor for my students and once they learn the words associated with the material, my hope is they go to that Social Studies Class and are able to understand the information as it is being presented by their teacher.
My hope is these books with pictures and posters will add to the library of knowledge they create in their own minds. I shower my students with vocabulary from the era we study. I then let history come alive for students as they create their own visuals such as posters, dioramas, art projects, reports and even digital reports to present to the class. These supplies will help with this.
