Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My student-athletes are about to start another demanding soccer season. I am the girls soccer coach at a high school in Dallas, TX. A huge part of our success comes from analyzing our film from our games. Unfortunately, an F3 tornado destroyed our former campus and along with it a lot of the team's equipment and apparel. One of the major things that came up missing after the storm was the team camcorder. Through this tragedy I am hoping of raising funds for an Apple iPad to use an app that gives student-athletes from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and advocate for themselves. They can analyze their games and share highlights with colleges.
They learn so much from seeing themselves play and take note of their strengths and also identify their specific need of improvement.
This helps my players understand that "the objective in our team is to transform the group from a mere collection of talented individuals into a highly cohesive unit so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." (C. Hacker)
They beam with joy as they proudly see proof of their achievements.
My Project
With this up-to-date technology many of my girls will be able to analyze game film on their own time via the team account page that we use for the school soccer programs. This is essential because in order to achieve player development, my girls need the opportunity to self-assess themselves. During our team film study sessions, we highlight the desired player actions done well in games and discuss what to avoid as well.
There are many ways kids learn: they learn by listening and by being shown, but they learn most by doing.
Involving kids and showing them you care for their own development is a very powerful tool that this technological equipment will help us attain.
