My Students

I am an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher at a small, rural middle school nestled in the small community of East Bend, North Carolina. Our middle school is one of only two middle schools located within our county.

My 8th graders are fearless, enthusiastic, and always up for a challenge.

Like many adolescents, they have a true fascination for technology, love being around their friends, have a strong desire to fit in, but also work hard each day to discover their true identity. The energy they possess means there is never a dull moment in my classroom.

My students are not shy about sharing their thoughts and they find a way to make me laugh each and every day. I consider myself blessed to teach this diverse and fun-loving group of adolescents, and look forward to seeing all of the amazing things they end up doing with their lives.

My Project

Think back to a novel you remember getting hooked on as an adolescent. Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for the next chapter, and the love you shared for the characters. Each year, my students share that excitement and joy when we read S.E. Hinton’s classic novel, The Outsiders. My students are excited, enthusiastic readers who truly enjoy the heroic story of Ponyboy and the gang, and the theme of friendship and belonging that Hinton teaches throughout this beloved narrative. The class set we currently have is probably the same set that many of my students’ parents were using. Pages are falling, the book casing has come off, and they have been well-loved, yet as hard as they are to follow, my students still love them. This new class set will give me a chance to continue enhancing the print-rich classroom that I strive to create, and also give my future students an opportunity to start fresh with this amazing novel set that they love so much.
