Think back to a novel you remember getting hooked on as an adolescent. Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for the next chapter, and the love you shared for the characters. Each year, my students share that excitement and joy when we read S.E. Hinton’s classic novel, The Outsiders. My students are excited, enthusiastic readers who truly enjoy the heroic story of Ponyboy and the gang, and the theme of friendship and belonging that Hinton teaches throughout this beloved narrative. The class set we currently have is probably the same set that many of my students’ parents were using. Pages are falling, the book casing has come off, and they have been well-loved, yet as hard as they are to follow, my students still love them. This new class set will give me a chance to continue enhancing the print-rich classroom that I strive to create, and also give my future students an opportunity to start fresh with this amazing novel set that they love so much.
