A Document Camera for AP Language!

My students need a document camera to be successful in AP English Language and Composition.

My Students

Imagine being a junior in a high school AP English class and realizing that you cannot read the assigned texts well. For many of my students-- and yes, my AP students-- this is a frustrating reality. Help us change this and set kids on the path to college-- with a document camera!

As a third year teacher and Teach For America alum at an urban school, I have been repeatedly inspired by the stick-to-it-iveness that my students display.

A majority of my students come from impoverished backgrounds and are not strong readers or writers. My 2009-10 honors students were on an average 9.5 reading level their junior year. Because many of my students do not come from homes that are text-rich, they often struggle with comprehension and vocabulary that their peers in other socio-economic status categories simply would think nothing of. Regardless of their set-backs, my students are tenacious. To date, 17 out of 20 of my students have completed their summer work; a monumental task since they've never had summer work before. Simply put, their enthusiasm is unprecedented at my school and demonstrates their desire in becoming excellent, skilled students. They are ready for this challenge.

My Project

Last year, my students had a 1.85 reading level growth in just one semester. This year, I want to increase that growth so that my students are able to compete with all students taking the AP exam in May, and eventually, in the college of their choice. This is where you come in: the addition and implementation of a document camera will make a world of difference in sharing annotation strategies and writing and editing feedback. Students will have instantaneous, real-time feedback-- they'll be able to display their work for the class. We will also be able to more easily share student work for work shopping and editing. It will move the class to a more student-centered model, and students will feel empowered! They will become familiar with technology that is used in college classrooms across the county. The document camera will become an integral and important part of our learning community as well as an instrumental piece of equipment in their preparation for the AP exam.

With your help, I will help my students ready themselves for college and improve their literacy so they can compete with any student in America, or the world for that matter.

We have already begun working hard towards both of these goals and will be able to progress quickly and more efficiently with your help!
