A Cozy Space for Reading & Learning

My students need a carpet & a comfy couch to give them their own personal space when we are discussing literature together each day.

My Students

Dinosaurs, biologists, monsters, & astronauts... these are just some of the characters we pretend to be when we gather together to read each day. I strive to make my 26 preschool students receiving Special Education services feel safe, loved, & nurtured at school. When students have structure & stability, they feel comfortable to take risks & explore new ideas.

A carpet will provide a physical & visual space for each student to own during direct instruction.

A couch will give an alternative space to read as well as a comfy space for groups of kids to share books with their peers. Creating an inviting space makes a person of any age want to curl up with a good book. Help me teach the next generation of learners that they can become anything they want to when they open the pages of a book .

Our school has 320 students. We are a Title 1 school and have a 40% transient rate.

My Project

With these materials, our day will look different. The rug & couch will be used no less than 3 hours each day by little 3, 4, & 5 year olds who are eager to learn what adventures await them as I open a book before them each day. I can't wait to see students quickly moving back to their space on the carpet or couch as we alternate between activities requiring our bodies to move and be still.

My students & I love to learn through reading, dancing, singing & drawing.

Having a carpet with their own space & an alternate couch space will provide visual cues & accommodations to help all of my students with unique learning needs find success & value in literacy activities & discussions. These pieces of furniture will create a space for quality early intervention in my Preschool Special Education classroom.
