A Cozy, Calm Reading Retreat for Growing Minds

Help me give my students a safe, engaging reading environment that supports both their academic growth and their sensory needs, allowing them to build confidence, independence, and a love for reading.

My Project

My students are some of the most resilient, creative, and determined learners I know. They come to our resource classroom with unique strengths and challenges, and I love watching their confidence grow when they feel safe, supported, and successful. Many of my students work hard to strengthen their reading skills while also learning how to regulate their bodies and focus their attention. Even on tough days, they show up ready to try again.

This project will help transform our classroom library into a calming, structured reading space where students can truly thrive.

Flexible seating options such as floor cushions and soft seating will provide comfort and allow students to regulate their bodies while reading. Sensory supports like quiet fidgets and visual timers will help students maintain focus and build independence during independent reading time.

Organized book bins and front-facing displays will make it easier for students to select “just right” books that match their reading levels and interests. This increases engagement, builds fluency, and supports comprehension growth. Listening center materials and headphones will give students access to audiobooks, supporting vocabulary development and comprehension for students who are still developing decoding skills.

By combining literacy tools with sensory supports, this project will create a welcoming reading environment where students feel calm, confident, and motivated to grow as readers. My goal is not only to improve reading skills, but to help my students develop a love for books and belief in themselves as capable learners.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
