I teach two classes of amazing fourth graders, for reading and writing. Our school is over 60% free and reduced lunch. It is a community school where we provide more than just academics, we also support families with food, clothing and health needs as needed.
My students are a mix of learners; some are English Language Learners, some receive Special Education services and some receive Speech services.
What they have in common is that they are all eager learners who are a valued part of our classroom community.
I teach two classes of reading and writing. I have two co-teachers who come into my room to support our learners. Many lessons call for students to gather as a community on the rug. We currently don't have a rug, so students are sitting on the cold, hard floor.
A classroom rug will allow us a place to gather as readers and writers on a daily basis.
We also do daily community circles, so this will allow us a cozier place to gather and share. It also will create an additional space in the classroom for students to do their work or for teachers to conduct small group lessons.
