Do you ever feel like escaping into a world of magic, relaxation, and fun? This is what I want my students in my Kindergarten class to experience during our small group literacy station time and throughout their day.
The children in this community have experienced so many losses and have gone through so much in their lives since the May 22nd Tornado that tore through the heart of Joplin Missouri.
Many of the children have lost their homes and belongings and don't have a sense of stability. I want to make our learning time as exciting, relaxing and enriching as possible for these Kindergarteners every day. I want my students to have access to materials that will help them succeed in school.
My Project
I have requested 6 personal CD players, 10 packs of batteries, and an awesome collection of books on CD ranging from grades k-2. These resources will be placed in a literacy station in the classroom. The students will be divided into small groups and will be able to rotate to different stations throughout the classroom. The listening to books station is very important because it allows children to listen to language and follow along with their favorite book. Following the listening activity, the students will then be able to write about their book and work on several projects to help them with comprehension and many other literacy skills. Children need to be able to hear language, read at their level, write for enjoyment, and work with phonics in order to become proficient readers and writers. I want to prepare my kindergarten students for first grade and beyond. I really feel that if they get the opportunity to learn with enjoyment, they will also become life-long learners!
This project is so important because it will bring hope, happiness, and a love for literature to children who have experienced a great deal of trauma.
Thank you for considering donating to this project:-)
