My Students

My students are beginning to come into a genuine love for reading. I am noting this as I read through their personal narratives they have written about their reading lives, written along the lines of how they came into reading or, in the opposite, how they missed the reading life along the way. Their cut-to-the-chase narratives revisit feeling frustrations in taking a little more time to read, embarrassing moments wherein they were asked to read aloud, and demands on their reading that couldn't be met because of a limitation in skill and/or speed.

But, despite these personal shares to the contrary, my students are coming into a genuine love for reading, some again, and some for the very first time.

In a recent email, a former student talked about how her mother and father talked to her about her sister who is now reading for pleasure, something she had not been doing prior to this year. This student who now attends college took a moment to draft an email in celebration of what the encouragement of reading is doing for her sister now. And it was an affirmation of what we are attempting to do in the classroom.

My Project

Currently, our classroom library struggles to do the one thing that classroom libraries should do best: attract would-be readers to the books they may or may not know they are seeking. These bookshelves will help us to better categorize and curate our classroom library materials so that students in the room can better locate those books of interest.

This project will help us to help readers as they seek out books for independent reading.

This kind of access to high-interest, thoughtfully-selected books is in keeping with what some of America's leading voices in middle grade and young adult literacy have to say about classroom libraries and their curation.
