A Calming Space for Students With Complex Needs

My Project

The students in our Multiple Disabilities classroom love coming to school to interact with their environment and the people around them. Many of our students have unique sensory needs that can cause them to be easily overwhelmed in the busy school environment. As an occupational therapist, my job is to work with teachers to support students with sensory processing differences.

Help us give our students a comfortable sensory room to relax and be ready to learn.

A cozy space with fewer distractions will give our students a break from overstimulation and enable them to focus on one thing at a time. There will be simple items to manipulate that provide engaging sensory input, including a bubble tube, lights, music, and soft play equipment.

The first step in creating our calming sensory room is to have soft pillows and beanbags to be able to` interact with the space in a variety of comfortable positions. Most of our students have cognitive and physical disabilities, so we are focused on creating a space that is accessible to all!
