Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Art at a Chicago inner city charter high school with a low income population. My classes are an integrated mix of all four high school levels including a wide variety of ethnic and social backgrounds.
The kids mix together seamlessly and help inspire each other creatively. As a trained painter, I love to incorporate painting into my class as much as possible. The students respond to the opportunity to paint with great enthusiasm. Many have had no, or very few opportunities to paint in their lifetime. I often wonder what opportunities they will have after leaving HS. I teach about 200 kids a week and share my classroom with other teachers. This creates a challenge to find safe spaces in the room for drying their paintings.
A drying rack that can store student's paintings safely because it uses a limited amount of space will enable students to create more art. A drying rack will be less obtrusive to other classes sharing the classroom and create a safe place for the work. This will allow for more experimentation with paint and other materials in the Art classes. I often have many students who struggle with behavior issues or student achievement in other classes, that thrive in my Art class. They tend to love working with materials like paint. A safe place for art to dry will also allow students who wish to pursue art related fields in college a greater opportunity to experiment and create.
Right now, my Art classes are limited to what our classroom can handle and facilitate. Your help will support and enable their creativity by providing a safe place for their art work to dry. It will also benefit the other classes that use the Art room by not creating distractions and limitations with painting spread out all over the place.
