A Better Mouse(trap)

My students need 10 computer mice.

I teach writing classes at a large high school in southern New Hampshire. Our district is working through a $4 million budget shortfall this year and facing another $6 million in cuts next year.

Our school was newly renovated five years ago and, at that time, spiffy new computers were installed. The powers that be have opted not to adequately fund equipment maintenance and replacement since that day and our computers are looking pretty rough. The mice, used by hundreds of not-so gentle teenage hands over the years, are taking it the hardest. I've kept my writing lab mostly operational by cannibalizing broken gear, liberal use of duct tape and, essentially, faith healing. Now, I'm all out of spare parts, I'm short on tape, and my faith is fading fast.

In short, we need new mice. Optical mice last longest because there are no balls to steal. USB mice are the best because there are no pins to bend. The end result of this small-stage equipment replacement effort will be to get my writing lab—which serves creative writing and journalism students of all levels—through another unfunded year and beyond.

Twelve of my students "won" the 50,000-word NaNoWriMo challenge in this lab this year (all told, this semester's creative writing class cranked out more than 400,000 new words of fiction) and my journalism students are churning out new publications, Web sites, podcasts and stories every week. These students need your help to keep their means of production working.
