The games and headphones have made our transition to phone-free much easier! It has been so much fun to see my students pulling out Connect Four or Uno to entertain themselves during our E-Block advisory time. I have a group of students who play Mancala regularly! (I'm sorry I don't have more pictures of them. I've been trying to be a good role model by keeping my phone out of sight and keep forgetting to take more pictures!)\r\n\r\nThe headphones have been a great help in allowing my students to participate in virtual labs and video activities individually without having the sound overwhelm the room. I often use video notes to supplement notes for my students who missed a day or need extra practice and the headphones allow them to work on that individually without distraction while other students are doing something different. Students often take advantage of the headphones on Mondays, in particular, when we have time for make-up work. I am hoping to work with our engineering capstone class to see if someone can design a rack to hold all the headphones neatly!","fullyFundedDate":1757707156557,"projectUrl":"project/going-phone-free/9650145/","projectTitle":"Going Phone Free!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Greenfield","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6007773"},{"teacherId":1218904,"projectId":9564923,"letterContent":"Thank you again for helping to fund my project. Many of the items are used daily, especially the Chromebook chargers and headphones. Many students like to listen to their personal choice of music while working independently, and since wireless earbuds are not allowed, they can pull up a playlist on their Chromebook, shut out other distractions, and work. Some of my more neurodivergent students like to wear them unplugged-the small ear cans are just enough to block out little irritating classroom sounds, but they can still hear instruction. This is a use I did not anticipate!\r\n\r\nThe second most popular item are the fidget toys. Prior to having such a nice collection, I would offer students with ADHD something small from my desk to keep their free hands busy so they could better focus. But the colorful selection of fidget toys is attractive, and many students have discovered that small finger movements/manipulations help them think/comprehend/remember! (See this study; one of quite a few with similar implications) https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/public-health/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2016.00094/full\r\n\r\nThe game buzzers are even better than expected. We don't use these daily, but they were a big hit the first time I brought them out for a pre-test review, and students have been asking to do \"more review with the buzzers\"!\r\nLastly, as expected, the Uno game is mostly being enjoyed by my E-Block/homeroom students, as they have enough time to actually play a full game. It has sincerely helped me so much to remain organized. I have themes each day and it is so easy to grab a magnet and put it on the agenda board. \r\n\r\nWhen my students know what to expect by seeing a daily agenda when they walk into the room, it really does help my students to get on task. Previously, I had to wait sometimes to write my agenda, and sometimes students were rolling in while I was writing and my attention was not on them. It has also helped students who may be a little anxious. Finally, I love the magnetic clips. I hang pictures and student work all the time, and I can move them around easily. \r\n\r\nThere was another unexpected benefit from the rolling boards. We have an E-block at my school, which is much like a homeroom. My students have been using the boards to play games, and to study! One of my students wants to be a teacher, and she has been reviewing Science and Math with a couple other students using one of the rolling whiteboards. \r\nI love how organized my classroom space has become!","fullyFundedDate":1750373684737,"projectUrl":"project/roll-stick-learn-magnetic-whiteboard/9415237/","projectTitle":"\"Roll, Stick, Learn: Magnetic Whiteboards for Shared Classrooms!\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lee Ann Arguien","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9005498_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683319925647","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/frenchteacher"},{"teacherId":9921900,"projectId":9109893,"letterContent":"My sincerest apologies for my tardiness with this thank-you package, but I really wanted an honest and sincere picture of how much this has impacted my little corner of the world.\r\nFirst off, the bookshelves...I nearly wept the first time I saw them in my room. I have placed some of our classroom library books on them, and the result is stunning. My kids don't throw the books or lay them carelessly on top of the deteriorating particle board bookshelves, but they take pride in using our books and treating them with respect. When they walk into my room, the bookshelf is the first thing they see, and my students are happy to be in the space. I can't tell you the pride that overwhelms me (and them) to see our sacrosanct area crowned with this beautiful piece! I've always bought my classroom library books at the town library sale, so they are in pretty good condition, but now the rest of my area looks just as good! \r\n\r\nThe notebooks you purchased are PERFECT! They are colorful, and my students again felt a sense of pride because they got to pick the color they wanted, and they've never done that before, so they recognize and appreciate the commitment you've made to their education. \r\n\r\nOf course, the posters fit right in with the tenor of my room, which is all about reading and writing/reflecting on reading. I can give my kids markers which dry up, pencils with no erasers, and several desks, although cleaned, are \"engraved\" with sentiments from the last 10 years by \"bored\" students that wobble on uneven legs... But I can't do what you did for them, I can't give them the sense of pride they have when they walk into a room with NICE bookshelves and when they choose their own notebook they can take home with them. The sense of peace for a safe environment and a sense of security they exhibit when in my room now comes alive. \r\nYou've given us all something to be thankful for in this new era of teaching and learning and growing. What has surprised me is which games the students gravitate towards. On the first day, multiple students were interested in building and playing with the Magnatiles, and the Kanoodle kit has been extremely popular. At the conclusion of most classes, I can find two or three students over at the games table playing with the various beaded shapes pretty much daily. They have also enjoyed the other games that were included in this request; Uno is a crowd favorite and they enjoyed playing the flip version especially. The Lego bin has come out and a group of students worked together to create a community of Lego shapes. \r\n\r\nI think what has been the most fun for me is watching the students interact. At the end of my advisory class, the primary group for whom this project was intended, I'm now having to kick out students, make them go to class instead of hanging out in my room. That's a really nice feeling to have, that my room is a safe space where they enjoy spending time. Your donations have helped to make that possible. I was pleased to notice how much class time has been saved since I can say, \"the materials you need are in your chairbacks\" (only I say it in Spanish!) and not have to deal with twenty or thirty students crowding around my scarcer resources to try and find what they need. Using the synthetic blood, students are able to perform blood typing on samples from fictional suspects and compare them to blood left at a mock crime scene—just like real forensic investigators would.\r\n\r\nNot only do the students love the challenge, but the activity also sharpens their critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they work to narrow down the list of possible suspects based on blood type evidence. I thought a mystery might be a good way to engage these students. This series ended up being perfect. We did a unit on the castles in the Loire Valley of France to go along with it. We also watched a documentary on the actual castle and ended the unit with Beauty in the Beast. The authors of these comprehensible readers do an excellent job of tying in real-life places, people, and events into their stories, making it very easy to tie authentic culture, videos, reading, and audio into these lessons. Students gained a ton of cultural knowledge, which boosted their confidence, knowing they could understand a story with many new vocabulary words and tenses. I will use this series again in the fall, and a future lesson entails a chocolate-tasting activity because one of the main characters is a chocolate maker. \r\n\r\nI have not had a whole class read Juliana yet, but I did offer it to one of my more advanced novice students. Some of his writing is included in one of the pictures. I also included pictures of some of my other students' writing from the end of the semester. These stories help students produce rich vocabulary even at the novice level. \r\n\r\nLes Chaussettes de Tito was an incredible story to use with level 1. My students did many collaborative activities. In the end, they had to rewrite and illustrate different parts of the story without the help of any resources. You can see in the photos how much these students were writing after just a few months of French. It is indeed exciting! Having students explore the food, music, schooling, and culture of Senegal enriched their cultural knowledge. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity. At this point in my long career, reading stories has brought new life to my lessons, and my students certainly benefit from my enthusiasm. They are learning to collaborate with their peers, building vocabulary and grammatical structures, and boosting their confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1735405226113,"projectUrl":"project/reading-in-french/8919756/","projectTitle":"Reading in French!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lee Ann Arguien","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9005498_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683319925647","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/frenchteacher"},{"teacherId":6007773,"projectId":8785863,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donations for these supplies! It may seem strange that I would bring up this situation, but sometimes, students struggle to get to school for very real reasons. Knowing that their teacher will work through the challenge with them can be very meaningful and helpful to whatever their situation may be.\r\n\r\nThe plastic pockets have been a great alternative to lamination and has saved me some printing time and the whiteboard markers have kept our scrap paper waste down.
