The phone locker may not be loved, but it is effective and it has been useful. Having a safe space for students to put their phones when they are having a hard time keeping them in their backpacks has been very useful. I have been able to help my students adhere to the no phone law and stay focused in class without the distraction of having to send them to the office. Additionally, the chromebook chargers have proven very useful! I have not needed to offer up all 5 in one class, yet, but I have had students ask to use them. We love being able to see our students throughout the day even when they don't have a specific reason for an appointment. Having the snacks in our office allows them an opportunity to drop by and say hello. Sometimes, it becomes a quick check-in to see how the day has been going, and other times we were just getting to call one of these students to our office and the timing is perfect.\r\n\r\nI know that the attached photos only show a couple of students helping to open the boxes and storing the snacks, but we have already had so many students come by for a nutritional pick-me-up. One of the helpers had asked be about snacks during the first week of school, so I got to say that food was coming and he could help unpack them once the delivery arrived.\r\n\r\nI cannot truly express how much the students and I appreciate this kindness, and how it adds to our day at school. It may seem a small gesture but it makes a huge impact in the day to day life of our students and enriches our interactions with them as school counselors. We have been using the new materials to create pathology-style reports based on a fictional victim. Students analyze the evidence, then draw and paint the wounds they observe, making sure to include the correct characteristics and place each injury in the appropriate location on the body.\r\n\r\nMy students really enjoy that this project combines science with art and gives them a chance to show what they know in a different way. I have loved watching them compare paintings and observe the artistic abilities of their classmates. This project has been a great way for all of my students to participate and feel successful.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use their finished pathology reports to piece together what they believe happened to their fictional victim. They will write a story explaining the crime and use the evidence from the wounds to determine the manner, cause, and mechanism of death. The bean bag chairs have given us a comfortable space for those parts of the process. So many teenagers don't read any more, and asking them to read in a new language is very intimidating for them.
