This particular author is very involved in writing her guides for her novels, so we're never left wondering, \"is that what the author really meant?\" There are so many activities in addition to the reading that students are easily able to understand the themes and messages of the novel. \r\n\r\nThe audio book is a huge help, especially for students who are apprehensive about their reading skills. So many teenagers don't read any more, and asking them to read in a new language is very intimidating for them. The students loved it. We had such meaningful, rich discussions with it. The students loved the way the book was written and were really able to see just how the experiences of the Holocaust were felt by many. While about a tragic and dark time in this world, the book highlights how important it is to live a life full of gratitude and love, while never forgetting the past, but living a good life in spite of and because of it. For the students to read about Eli Wiesel's experiences first, then realize that Eddie Jaku was also in the same Concentration camps as Eli was eye opening for the students. They were able to see the connections in comparing the two memoirs. The Lysol are regularly used for cleaning lab tables and desks and the hand sanitizer is keeping us all healthy in this season of colds. (I keep the bottle right next to the tissues!) With a new broom and cleaning supplies, it has been easier to encourage students to clean up their own messes. I have already had students find the broom to clean up a spilled snack without asking for it!\r\n\r\nIt may seem like cleaning supplies aren't essential to a student's learning experience, but a clean and tidy classroom truly is. When the classroom is clean, it is less distracting and encourages students to stay organized, which, in turn, improves student learning. The large TV allows me to clearly demonstrate professional design software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign in real time. Instead of students trying to follow along on a small screen or crowded around my computer, everyone can now see each step of the process clearly from their own seat.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students is being able to watch live demonstrations and then immediately try the same tools themselves. They can see exactly how I use layers, shapes, typography, and effects, which makes the learning feel much more accessible and less intimidating. It has boosted their confidence and helped them work more independently.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who struggled at first have especially benefited from this technology. Visual learners, in particular, have really warmed up to it because they can watch the workflow step by step instead of relying only on written instructions. The games and headphones have made our transition to phone-free much easier! It has been so much fun to see my students pulling out Connect Four or Uno to entertain themselves during our E-Block advisory time. I have a group of students who play Mancala regularly! (I'm sorry I don't have more pictures of them. I've been trying to be a good role model by keeping my phone out of sight and keep forgetting to take more pictures!)\r\n\r\nThe headphones have been a great help in allowing my students to participate in virtual labs and video activities individually without having the sound overwhelm the room. I often use video notes to supplement notes for my students who missed a day or need extra practice and the headphones allow them to work on that individually without distraction while other students are doing something different. Students often take advantage of the headphones on Mondays, in particular, when we have time for make-up work.
