I teach at a K-6th grade Fine Arts Magnet School in Northern Indiana. The students I see mainly come from low income families. I have taught this incoming group of 5th grade students since many were in kindergarten. They are a very creative group of kids that get excited about trying out new concepts and are always willing to give new ideas a try.
Our school runs a Fine Arts Friday program where grade levels are submersed in a theme for 4 weeks.
The theme is chosen by grade level teachers and along with our fine arts team, we develop a program to integrate the fine arts into the curriculum. The program concludes with a showcase where family and community members are invited to experience our students learning first hand.
Mr. Taylor, a 5th grade teacher, and myself are excited to teach our students this year about the three dimensional world. We want to create a STEAM lesson that incorporates learning into our Fine Arts Friday projects. We want to engage our students and teach them the science behind creating in the 3-D.
Our project idea stems from 5th grade science/engineering standards in which students learn to identify a simple problem with the design of an object that reflects a need or a want.
We want to focus on how technology and invention is a process where failure and success are used to improve a model or prototype. In addition, 5th grade economic standards will be incorporated to show how the increase of technology has effected supply and demand and goods and services. Students will use the elements and principals of art to create ideas for objects that will be printed on the Flash Forge Finder 3-D Printer.
