My students need the Neolounge chairs. These will help create a classroom space that is inviting and fosters a love for reading, writing, working collaboratively with their peers, and a belief in their own success.
We are an active and diverse group of 50 students with varied learning, physical, and psychological needs.
We are from a large urban district in upstate New York with a very high poverty rate and trauma level.
My students come to school with so much on their mind that paying attention in class is the hardest thing for them to do! At the end of the day, they are just kids who need and want a safe place where they feel comfortable and cared for.
My Project
I am working on implementing flexible seating in my classroom. I am a 6th grade English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Reading teacher. I want to make my classroom a space that is inviting and a place that fosters a love for reading, writing, collaboration, and success. Last year I changed to tables and some standing desks, this year I want to expand with more seating options for my students.
We will use the NeoLounge chairs and the lap trays to promote social skills and academic skills.
The NeoLounge chairs and lap trays will be great for collaborative work in English Language Arts and Social Studies. The NeoLounge chairs would also be fantastic to use for book clubs during our Reading block. The NeoLounge chairs and lap trays will help the students focus by giving them the comfort and movement that they need in order to stay focused on the classwork they need to complete. If the students are more focused they will be able to achieve better in all academic areas but especially during reading, where most of my students read several grade levels below the grade level that they are in.
My biggest joy is seeing my students succeed and finally allow themselves to believe in their success. Having this flexible seating project funded for my classroom will allow for my students to become more focused during the school day which will lead to better academic achievement, which will lead to the belief that they can succeed in life!
