My Students

I teach in an urban school district in a diverse neighborhood. There are about 750 students in the school, grades kindergarten through eight. 100% of the students qualify for the free lunch program. About 15% students are special needs students. It is a diverse community of students, with over 25 languages spoken at home and about 45% of students learning English for the first time at school. Many families are first generation immigrants to the United States.

Our school has a fine and performing arts focus, with classes in visual art, dance, drama and music.

Students also have classes in library, technology, physical education, and health. This well rounded curriculum provides opportunities for all learners to feel successful in school regardless of language or disability. It is a wonderful place to teach!

My Project

My students develop their own choreography as a regular part of my dance curriculum, grades 4 through 8. They work in collaborative groups, create the dances based on a theme, choose their own music, organize costumes, and perform in a show. The groups could be more efficient if they each had access to their own music sources and players. I need boomboxes that play CDs, have a port for an iPod or phone, and have enough sound for groups to be choreographing simultaneously.

The materials I will buy will help the groups develop their choreography more efficiently and collaboratively, and it will bring my dance materials into the 21st century.

Currently I have two boomboxes, which the student groups must share. They take turns using the boombox, but sometimes the groups don't work as hard on their dance while they are waiting for their turn to use the music. I have dozens of CDs, so I need the music players to be able to play CDs. I have also invested in two iPod touch devices, so I need the music player to be accessible to this as well. Finally, I would like some portable speakers that can be used with the iPods. With all of these materials, I can have all groups working simultaneously, which will reduce the amount of time I have to spend reminding students to stay on task, and allow me to support their choreographic process more. The groups can complete their dances more quickly, which will allow for more refine and revise time before our final performance.
