3, 2, 1, Done! Timers for Effective Math Groups

My students need visual timers: 1 large Time Timer for whole group use, and 6 desktop Time Timers for partner and small group use.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach math to 27 3rd through 5th grade English language learners at a public school in Virginia. Some of my students have lived in the United States their whole lives, while others emigrated within the last year.

Though some think that math is the easiest subject for students who are still learning English, my students will tell you that they have to work hard to learn the language of math. All of my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are performing below grade level expectations in math. Some of them struggle with language-heavy story problems and unfamiliar, math-specific vocabulary. Some need practice, practice, practice with basic math facts. Some can't express how they figured out the answer. We have a lot of work to do. But there is one small thing we could change in the classroom to help my students learn more effectively: time management. We have to slow down the pace so that every student has a chance to understand the material. We need more skills practice and vocabulary instruction. But we still have to cover the same material as the mainstream classrooms. We have no time to waste!

To help my students with time management during math groups, I am requesting visual timers (1 large timer for whole group instruction and 6 small desktop timers for partner and small group work). These timers provide a visual representation on a clock face so that students can easily see how much time is remaining. The students will use the timers to achieve quicker transitions between activities and to keep themselves on task so that they complete work in the time allotted. Ultimately, using these timers will give my students more time to focus on math!

This is a small project that will have a huge impact on my students' ability to learn math. With fewer minutes wasted on setting up, transitioning between activities, and cleaning up, my students will find more minutes devoted to math. My estimate of 35 hours of learning reflects just 5 minutes gained for each of my 3 classes on each of the remaining 140 days in the school year. You will not only give my students timers; your generous help will give my students that extra time they need so badly, so that they can be successful at math.
