Our school has a high level of needy students for various reasons.
We have a very small corner that has mats on the floor for students when they need to calm down. Justin thought it would be better to have a private and more comfortable area that is more sensory-friendly for students who have Autism. He worked with the Autism specialist to come up with a room and some items that are appropriate for an area that will be suitable for students.
Our students want to get items that help bring families together for our 2nd annual Turkey Bingo! Students have been working together to think of different items that would bring families together who don't have the money to otherwise get such items. The students came up with ideas like camping, playing games together, eating and using the computer. With these ideas students came up with a project that would support our family night at Turkey Bingo. Students want to give items to families that will help develop family togetherness. These items will be give around the holidays to encourage families spending more time together in a positive way.
In Their Own Words
We want families to start spending time with one another and doing things with their kids. A lot of our families don't have money to go do things so the items we picked out would help families to do things at home like eat a family meal, play a game together or get them out even in their back yard and go camping together.
We are taking the lead on what items and the theme we want to have for our event. We will be hosting the give away and tell families why we have chosen the items we have. This year we are creating the items we want to give to families instead of staff.
Once our project is funded we will gather items that are donated and keep them in a secure office at the school. We will come in before the event and set up a table or a section of our gym and set items out for families to look at when they come to Turkey Bingo. We will also be posting the pictures of the items on our website to help encourage families to attend. We will hold a drawing throughout the event to give away these specific items.
