My Students

My community is nestled in the woods on the very outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska. Oftentimes overlooked by travelers, we pride ourselves on lending a helping hand to neighbors and raising our children in the ways of community service and gratitude. Our school reflects this ideology in the way we raise our students to care for each other through respect and honesty.

We want to prepare our students to be 21st century citizens by teaching them certain core competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and digital literacy.

Our goal is to remember and use the cornerstones of the past to help us navigate our future. Embracing a 21st-century learning model requires us to create learners who take intellectual risks, foster resilient learning dispositions, and nurture school communities where everyone is a learner.

My Project

I plan to use these materials to (1)create interactive learning stations in our school for students to access before, during, and after class time, (2) make classroom kits that fellow teachers can checkout to use as a tool for intervention, enrichment, or training, and (3) to create take home kits for students to checkout and use at home with their families.

What an incredible way to get parents enthusiastic about what their students are doing in school and a great way for the child to get one on one time with technology based learning!

I want to focus primarily on Alaska State Math Standards K.OA.3, 1.OA.3, and 2.OA.2 which tracks students K-2's ability to fluently represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within the number 20. With the use of Osmo, students will arrange physical tiles to make new numbers by adding, subtracting, or multiplying the numbers on the tiles. Experimenting with numbers becomes fast and intuitive.

The Alaska State Science Standard I'm focusing on is Technology Standard C which states that a student should be able to use technology to explore ideas, solve problems, and derive meaning. Learning tools such as Makey Makey, Osmo coding kit, and Ozobots are extraordinary platforms for children to take intellectual risks and to collaborate with others. Students will be working circuits and coding to observe, analyze, and interpret their discoveries as well as create new knowledge by evaluating and extending information across multiple technologies.

Once receiving these items, I will work with other educators to design a simple test and rubric that will assess students K-2's prior & gained knowledge of the standards mentioned above. With the plan of implementing this in Fall 2017, the quiz will be given to students in October, January, and May to measure the increase in learning.
