My Students

Gone are the days of learning through the pages of a textbook. We are on a journey of educating children through the use of technology in an effort to better prepare them for college and career readiness. Technology in the classroom opens up many doors and extends learning far beyond four walls.

Fourth graders at my school are fascinating.

They are high-achieving students who require a hands-on, inquiry based classroom that allows them to be the master of their own learning. Often times, it is difficult to show 'growth' - therefore, there are several challenges for the teacher. My fourth graders need exciting, project-based, real world learning in a collaborative, dynamic, child-centered environment where all minds are challenged to be creative and innovative problem solvers.

My Project

I am requesting 2 Apple iPod Touch digital players with Apple iOS 5 operating software, front and rear cameras, and internet capability. Students will use these digital devices to navigate the web in order to explore topics of interest, research real-world applications, problem solve, analyze, and create a private 'you tube' channel of videos that explain content in order to 'flip' the classroom (students supporting student learning). I have visions of creating mini-projects accessed through QRA codes, collaborative digital morning work, and project based/STEM learning - which would be supported by having such devices available. Students would also use these devices to support language arts, math, science, and social studies through exploring and, in turn, creating digital media. The possibilities are endless!

All too often, classrooms are 80% lecture/teacher-directed and 20% application.

Students are merely an 'audience' for teachers and don't take ownership of their learning. This project will turn the tables and allow my students to be the 'teacher' - for themselves, their peers, and even me. Technology in learning is the wave of the future!
