We are a Title I school in a highly transient area of a military town. My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. Nearly one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their enthusiasm for learning, especially when it relates to things they are passionate about!
Our student population has become increasingly diverse in recent years.
They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences. The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for new ways to keep students engaged and build skills that will prepare them for potential careers.
2020 is the year of the Rat! So, we are beefing up our selection of books which features these fascinating characters, or at least some of their rodent relatives! The selected books are a combination of educational and recreational titles.
The texts will help our third graders as they study ancient Chinese culture and the contributions they made to modern civilization.
These books will update and expand our library holdings related to ancient China and help students solidify these content standards.
In addition, some of our students favorite characters just happen to be mice! Our well loved volumes could use some freshening up to celebrate the Lunar New Year!
