This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is my first year in 1st grade with 20 first grade students. I moved down from 8th grade to apply my masters degree in reading to younger students. I am in an inclusive classroom and have many students with different needs. I teach in a low income district where 100% of my students are eligible to receive free lunch. I have students that range in ability levels, needs, and unique learning capabilities. Some of my students are very active and rely on regular movement breaks. Even then, some of my students still have trouble focusing throughout the entire day.
My students are an energetic and hardworking group and are always eager to try new things.
We have had so much success this year but being new to a grade has had its financial challenges. I will regularly purchase supplies and items for my class, but some things have proven to be unattainable alone. I believe that investing in our children will ensure success in our future!
My Project
As an educator, I always advocate for my students. We currently have a traditional seating layout with tables and chairs. I notice that many of my students do really well during our math and reading center time when they are free to choose their seats. Many students choose to sit on the floor or the carpet but I would like to provide more comfortable seating at tables and other optional seating to be used all throughout the day. I also have noticed that many of my students have energy that they really need to expel throughout the day (such as pencil tapping, rocking back on chairs, etc.). I came across "flexible seating" where the seating can help fulfill movement needs, contribute to a more inviting classroom, and help students be more comfortable. This can help students remain concentrated while providing them with their needs.
Think about where you do your best work?
Is it at the table with a hard chair? Probably not. I would like to support my students' needs and build a community in my classroom where my students feel comfortable to do their best learning. The research behind flexible seating has been positive by encouraging collaborative communication, community, independence, movement, and choice.
Please help me create this community within my classroom!
