As an educator, I always advocate for my students. We currently have a traditional seating layout with tables and chairs. I notice that many of my students do really well during our math and reading center time when they are free to choose their seats. Many students choose to sit on the floor or the carpet but I would like to provide more comfortable seating at tables and other optional seating to be used all throughout the day. I also have noticed that many of my students have energy that they really need to expel throughout the day (such as pencil tapping, rocking back on chairs, etc.). I came across "flexible seating" where the seating can help fulfill movement needs, contribute to a more inviting classroom, and help students be more comfortable. This can help students remain concentrated while providing them with their needs. Think about where you do your best work? Is it at the table with a hard chair? Probably not. I would like to support my students' needs and build a community in my classroom where my students feel comfortable to do their best learning. The research behind flexible seating has been positive by encouraging collaborative communication, community, independence, movement, and choice. Please help me create this community within my classroom!
