My Project

Did you know kindergarten is the only grade with a Counting and Cardinality standard? In kindergarten we work on counting to 100, making numbers to 20, and even fluently adding and subtracting within five. The growth students need to make in kindergarten with counting is astounding, but this goal is easily achieved through modeling, discourse, and hands-on learning.

Building number sense in kindergarten will give students the foundation they need to succeed in later math.

Almost everyday we do math centers after our lesson and practice, so that we can review and strengthen our skills. Some children may be practicing their fine motor skills and writing numbers, while others are adding within ten or grouping even higher! Nuts About Counting will benefit students still working on numbers to ten, while number rockets can be used with students that are working on numbers to twenty.

I've seen such growth in my students this year allowing them to work on centers that interest them and fill their needs. Students have been more engaged and less frustrated because there are multiple choices for each level of learner. Expanding choices by adding new centers keeps them interested in learning and helps strengthen those skills.
