This carpet is great! It has 28 smiley faces on it, one for each student in my class to sit on. The smiley faces are spread out so that the students are not sitting on top of each other and everyone has their own personal space. \r\nThe colors of the carpet are beautiful and very inviting for kids as they come into the classroom. The kids love being able to choose their favorite color of smiley face to sit on whenever we go to the carpet. \r\nThe carpet is primarily being used for read alouds during our class time. It is also used for group sharing time during our morning meetings as well as a place that the students can work with a partner at. It will be used on indoor recess days where the kids can build with legos and magnetic blocks on the carpet. Thank you once again for your generosity. While we had our share of fiction, mystery was limited. I always want to make sure every student can find a book of interest to them, whether that be mystery, science fiction, fantasy, or any of the other wonderful genres available. \r\n\r\nI think the students were most excited for Eerie Elementary because it was something that they heard their friends talking about and they've seen before at the book fair. Many students took an interest in the Scaredy Bat series, including the books that were in Spanish. This is a low difficulty series for third grade, which is important when I'm making sure to have something available for all levels of readers.\r\n\r\nWhile this group of students didn't have much time with the books before the school year ended, it's great to have them available on day one for my new class of third graders. We just received the last items from the Bravelands series and the kids are finally excited to be able to read them. I really enjoy that this project included all the story arcs, so the kids interested can just start the first book of a different arc and not have to wait in line for book one. \r\n\r\nThese books have been very popular with some of the high reading boys, but as other students have seen their popularity, they too are becoming interested. As adults we often read books based off of favorite authors or recommendations of friends. I love that as our library expands students are trying new authors and genres, and taking risks by sometimes choosing a more difficult or lengthy book. \r\n\r\nThere were two books out of stock so hopefully in the future we can find those and close up the one small gap we have. The students were so excited when these came, and many were immediately checked out for independent reading. This series has been popular for awhile and I don't see them losing traction anytime soon, so I know these books will be well-loved for years to come. \r\n\r\nIn my room, students get to select books to keep in their table bins and read when they are finished with work early. We also try to make time for independent reading everyday, so kids are often switching out books to get a new one. With more books I think the biggest problem we have been working on is reading a book all the way through before selecting a new one. \r\n\r\nWe are very grateful for all the support we have had with our classroom library. I love how they get excited to pick up books in both Spanish and English, building their second language while continuing to expand their first language. \r\n\r\nThere was also a group of very happy students when we opened Mr. Wolf's Classroom. This series was a student request, as we only had book once in the series. It has become very popular recently, and is picked up by a student as soon as one is put back on the shelf. The students love having options, especially more options that they can read independently. \r\n\r\nDragon Masters was an immediate popular choice because it is a fantasy series much like Wings of Fire, but way less difficult. The students who were trying to read Wings of Fire to be more like some of their peers now have a fun option thats more their reading ability level.\r\n\r\nThe Baby Mouse and Narwhal books were also well received. Some of the students had already finished the other books in the series and were excited to grab new ones thye had not read yet. \r\n\r\nIt's wonderful that with help I can provide so many choices for my students. It's also pretty cool that my biggest problem has become kids trying to read during class instruction. They've also been very exited for jobs at the end of the day, because a student gets to vacuum and keep it looking nice and ready for kids to relax. One student even saw the second book in the series at his local library and grabbed it since it wasn't available in the classroom! \r\n\r\nOverall they've really enjoyed graphic novels so it was a nice change for some to grab a fiction chapter book. They use their baskets to store bookbags in. Baby Mouse has been popular with the girls, and a great introduction for them into graphic novels. Same goes for Baby-Sitters Little Sister, the girls are loving them.
